Renaissance is looking for a collaborative and detail orientated Research Scientist to join our R&D team. This role will be based out of our offices located on the University of British Columbia’s main campus, in beautiful Vancouver, BC.
Reporting to the Principal Scientist – Discovery Group, the Research Scientist will be responsible for designing and conducting cell biology-focused R&D experiments across a variety of projects that advance the company’s bioactive molecule production and delivery platform technology for use in agriculture and healthcare.
In addition to specific R&D projects, this role also provides an opportunity to spearhead the development of in vitro cell culture R&D infrastructure, including the development of a variety of cell-based assays in insect and mammalian cells. This research and infrastructure will form a key component of our growing bioactive molecule discovery pipeline. The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to be involved with research that will be published in peer-reviewed scientific journals as well as in patents.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Independently advance R&D projects for bioactive molecule production and delivery technology using appropriate cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or microbiology techniques
Specific methodologies include: Insect and/or mammalian cell culture, transfection, co-culture assays, DNA and RNA extraction, RT-qPCR, western blot, flow cytometry, construct assembly (cloning), gene editing, basic bioinformatic analyses
Drive the development of the company’s in vitro cell culture R&D infrastructure, including the development of a variety of cell-based assays in insect and mammalian cells, plus high-throughput adaptations where appropriate
Foster an entrepreneurial mindset—bring new innovative ideas to the table and challenge the status quo; critically assess current methods and protocols and identify areas for efficiency, improvements, and innovation
Contribute to writing peer-reviewed scientific publications, and patent applications
Regularly update management, the team, and company on project progress; clearly and openly communicate project and process results, successes, challenges and ideas
Foster an ongoing collaborative environment—leverage peer skillsets and experience to advance your own projects and offer your experience to help progress other team projects
Additional duties, as relevant and required
Education & Experience Required:
PhD in cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, or similar field and 2+ years work experience, preferably in industry
Broad technical and experimental mastery in cell biology (insect and/or mammalian cell culture systems), biochemistry, and molecular biology (relevant to the role) is required
Experience with designing and implementing high throughput cell-based assays is an asset; experience in microbiology, especially with yeast, is also an asset
Strong scientific creativity skills, independent thought, and troubleshooting capability
Exemplary teamwork, collaboration, and communication (verbal and written English) skills
Entrepreneurial attitude—thrives in a fast-paced and challenging environment and works towards solving problems in a pragmatic and effective manner
This is a full-time, permanent role. General workdays are 8:30 am – 5:00 pm Monday to Friday; occasional evening and/or weekend work required to meet deadlines.
